CMS Provides Details Regarding Open Payments

Recently, the AMCNO participated in a Region V teleconference for a discussion on the topic of Open Payments. Representatives from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) outlined the Open Payments program, which is a national disclosure program created by the Affordable Care Act (ACA) that increases public awareness of financial relationships between the healthcare industry and physicians or teaching hospitals. Drug, device, biological, and medical supply manufacturers are required to report payments or transfers of value they make to physicians or teaching hospitals, and CMS collects this data annually, and makes it public.

The CMS representatives have provided the AMCNO and other medical associations who participated in the teleconferences with an FAQ document for physicians about Open Payments. To view this document click here.
