Surgeon General Dr. Murthy Sends Letter to Physicians; AMCNO Requests Members to Respond to his “Ask”

The AMCNO is asking its members to check their mailboxes for a letter from the U.S. Surgeon General Dr. Vivek Murthy, calling on the nation’s physicians to raise awareness of the opioid epidemic and further efforts to end the misuse of the drugs.

“We will educate ourselves to treat pain safely and effectively,” Dr. Murthy said in his letter, adding, “We will screen our patients for opioid use disorder and provide or connect them with evidence-based treatment. We can shape how the rest of the country sees addiction by talking about and treating it as a chronic illness, not a moral failing.”

Earlier this month, Dr. Murthy launched, a campaign and website that contains treatment options for pain and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Opioid Prescribing Guideline. It also allows physicians to join the pledge to help turn the tide on the opioid crisis.

“Years from now, I want us to look aback and know that, in the face of a crisis that threatened our nation, it was our profession that stepped up and led the way,” he said in the letter.
