Register Now for the AMCNO/CMBA Medical Legal Summit: March 24-25, 2017

The 2017 Medical Legal Summit will be held March 24-25 at the Cleveland Metropolitan Bar Association (CMBA) Conference Center. This annual event is co-sponsored by the CMBA, the Academy of Medicine of Cleveland & Northern Ohio (AMCNO), and the Academy of Medicine Education Foundation.

Keynote speaker Gail Wilensky, PhD, will present “Update on the Affordable Care Act and the Impact of Medicare Payment Reforms” on Friday, March 24, at 4:30 p.m.

Dr. Wilensky is an economist and senior fellow at Project HOPE, an international health foundation. She directed the Medicare and Medicaid programs from 1990-1992 and served in the White House as a senior health and welfare adviser to President George HW Bush. From 1997-2001, she chaired the Medicare Payment Advisory Commission, which advises Congress on payment and other issues relating to Medicare, and previously chaired one of its predecessor commissions—the Physician Payment Review Commission.

Saturday, March 25, will feature three plenary sessions:

  • 8:15 a.m. – “MACRA.” The panel will consist of Cathy Costello, JD, Director, CliniSyncPLUS Consulting, Ohio Health Information; Dr. Robert Furno, Chief Medical Officer, Region 5, Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services; and Dr. Howard Pitluk, Health Services Advisory Group.
  • 9:15 a.m. – “Addressing the Opioid Crisis in Ohio.” The speakers will be Dr. Nicole Labor, addiction specialist at Summa Health System; Carole Rendon, U.S. Attorney for the Northern District of Ohio; and Hugh Shannon, Administrator, Cuyahoga County Medical Examiner.  
  • 10:30 a.m. – “Lawsuits: How to Survive, How to Avoid them (a Medical/Legal Perspective).” The speakers will be Dr. John Bastulli, St. Vincent Charity Medical Center; The Honorable Nancy R. McDonnell, Cuyahoga County Court of Common Pleas; and R. Eric Kennedy, Esq., Weisman, Kennedy & Berris Co., LPA.

Following the plenary sessions will be a breakout session with these two topics:

  • “Medical Marijuana.” Speakers will include Cassandra Manna, JD, from Roetzel & Andress, LPA, and Dr. Jerry Mitchell, Medical Marijuana Advisory Panel.
  • “Legal Issues in the Care of the ‘Vulnerable’ Patient.” This panel will consist of Chuck Corea, In-House Attorney at the Cuyahoga County Board of Developmental Disabilities; Dr. Ewald Horwath, Department of Mental Health at MetroHealth System; and Cynthia Norwood, Executive Director of The Arc of Greater Cleveland.

This summit is intended to bring together physicians, attorneys, healthcare professionals and other who work in allied professions, for education, lively discussion and opportunities to socialize. The co-chairs of the event are AMCNO President Dr. Robert Hobbs and Marlene Franklin, Esq., General Counsel, MetroHealth Medical Center.
