AMA Offers Resources to Assist Physicians with New Quality Payment Program

The American Medical Association (AMA) is providing new resources—such as informational podcasts, payment model evaluator, and step-by-step assessment guide—to simplify physicians’ participation in Medicare’s new Merit-based Incentive Payment System (MIPS).

One of the new resources, the customizable MIPS Action Plan, will help physicians pursue the right course of action for their practice, take recommended steps to meet program requirements, and measure their performance against important milestones.

A survey conducted by the AMA shows that an overwhelming majority of physicians are unprepared to successfully participate in the MIPS program, despite the transitional flexibility provided for 2017. This is particularly the case for physicians who have not previously participated in Medicare reporting programs and are in need of basic information on what they need to do this year to avoid a payment penalty in 2019.

As the AMCNO has previously reported, the Medicare Access and CHIP Reauthorization Act (MACRA) will reshape how Medicare pays physicians under the Quality Payment Program, by encouraging them to adopt value-based models in health care.

The new resources, as well as additional information on MACRA and its related payment programs, can be accessed here
