SMBO Issues Guidance Document on Telemedicine Rule

The State Medical Board of Ohio (SMBO) has issued an FAQ guidance document to facilitate compliance with Rule 4731-11-09, Ohio Administrative Code. The rule describes the circumstances under which a physician or physician assistant can prescribe medication to a patient whom the physician or physician assistant has never personally examined when the patient is at a different location from the prescriber. Although most frequently referred to as the “telemedicine prescribing” rule, 4731-11-09 applies in all situations where the physician or physician assistant is in one location and the patient is in another and the physician or physician assistant has never personally examined the patient.
