Ohio Calls on the Global Community for Solutions to the Opioid Epidemic

The Ohio Third Frontier Commission has created the Ohio Opioid Technology Challenge as a way to seek new approaches and technology solutions to combat the opioid crisis.

The challenge will leverage $8 million of a $20 million commitment to advance new ideas, which can be submitted by researchers and citizen scientists, in the battle against drug abuse and addiction, according to the State of Ohio Board of Pharmacy.

This program is a multi-phase competition, with escalating prize amounts for the progressive levels of solution development. The first stage is the Idea Phase, which launched October 18. The submission deadline is Dec. 15, 2017, at 5 pm. Winners will be announced Jan. 31, 2018. During this timeframe, ideas will be collected from technical and non-technical audiences, including researchers, service providers, caregivers, citizens, and anyone impacted by the crisis. Up to five ideas, with the highest likelihood of leading to a solution, will be selected for a cash award of $10,000 each. Runners-up will be entered into a drawing to win $500 prizes; 40 will be awarded—20 to citizens and 20 to technical professionals and experts.

The Challenge Phase will launch February 2018 and has a submission deadline of August 2018. The winners of this round will be announced September 2018. This phase will call on the expertise of the worldwide business and innovation community to advance the technical solutions. The Product Phase will launch September 2018, and the winners will be announced August 2019. This phase enables winners from the Challenge Phase to develop and refine their solutions for market entry. Currently, at least $6.5 million is available in the prize pool for these two phases; corporate support is being sought to expand the prize pool. The path to commercialization will then take place 2019-2021.
