ODH Announces Release of Two Drug Overdose Data Reports

The Ohio Department of Health (ODH) recently announced that the two reports below have been posted to its Violence & Injury Prevention Section website, covering 2020 Ohio Drug Overdose data. 

  • 2020 Ohio Drug Overdose Report - In summary, 5,017 Ohioans died from unintentional drug overdoses in 2020--a 25% increase over 2019, compared with a national increase of 35%. Illicit fentanyl or fentanyl analogs were involved in 81% of overdose deaths in Ohio, often in combination with other drugs. In addition, fentanyl-related deaths increased 32%, followed by deaths related to psychostimulants, which increased 28%. And, Black non-Hispanic males had the highest drug overdose death rate in Ohio compared with other gender and race/ethnicity groups.

  • 2020 Drug Overdose Data: Demographic Summary - This report takes a look at the demographics associated with the 5,017 Ohioans who died from unintentional drug overdose in 2020. The number and rate of unintentional drug overdose deaths varied considerably by demographic factors, including county of residence. Franklin County had the highest number of deaths (803), followed by Cuyahoga County and Hamilton County (484 and 366 deaths, respectively). From 2015 to 2020, Scioto County had the highest average age-adjusted rate of unintentional drug overdose deaths (83.4 deaths per 100,000), followed by Montgomery and Gallia County (65.1 and 62.6 deaths per 100,000, respectively).
