Medical Marijuana Forum covers Legalization in Ohio and its Impact on Economy, Health Outcomes

The Free Medical Clinic of Greater Cleveland recently hosted “Medical Marijuana: Truth and Consequences,” a forum co-sponsored by the Academy of Medicine of Cleveland & Northern Ohio and the Academy of Medicine Education Foundation, among other local institutions.

Keynote Speaker Kari Franson, PharmD, PhD, discussed “Marijuana as Medicine: The State of the Science.” Dr. Franson is the Associate Dean for Professional Education in the Department of Clinical Pharmacy at the University of Colorado. Two panel discussions also took place during the forum—one was entitled “Lessons Learned: Intended and Unintended Consequences” and the other was “Medical Marijuana: The Economic Impact.”

Sitting on the first panel were Derek Siegle, Executive Director for the Ohio High Intensity Drug Trafficking Area; Jessie Hill, Associate Dean for Faculty Development and Research and Judge Ben C. Green Professor of Law at Case Western Reserve University School of Law; Jason M. Jerry, MD, Alcohol and Drug Recovery Center, Lutheran Hospital; and Dr. Franson. Michael Shafarenko, from ideastream, served as the moderator.

The second panel consisted of Patrick McManamon, CEO for Cannassure; Garett Fortune, CEO of FunkSac; Candi Clouse, MS, Program Manager for the Center for Economic Development at the Levin College of Urban Affairs, Cleveland State University; and Ari Seaman, Founder of iGrow. Brian Tucker, Vice President and Director of Corporate Affairs for Dollar Bank served as moderator.

A healthy debate between Ian James, Executive Director of ResponsibleOhio, and Marcie Seidel, Executive Director for the Drug-Free Action Alliance, rounded out the event.
